NMN vs. NR: Comparing the Two Leading NAD⁺ Precursors

If you have shopped for an NAD+ supplement, you have seen two acronyms compete for your attention: NMN and NR. They are close cousins, and the internet loves to declare one a clear winner. The honest answer is more nuanced.

The one-line difference

Both are precursors your body converts into NAD+. The difference is where they sit on the assembly line:

  • NR (nicotinamide riboside) is one step further upstream. Inside the cell, NR is converted into NMN…
  • NMN is then the final step before NAD+ itself.

So NR → NMN → NAD+. They travel the same road; they just get on at slightly different points.

What the human evidence looks like

NMN. Randomised, placebo-controlled trials have shown NMN can raise the blood NAD+/NADH ratio (Frontiers in Aging, 2022) and improve muscle insulin sensitivity in a specific population (Yoshino et al., Science, 2021).

NR. NR also has published human trials showing it reliably raises blood NAD+ and is generally well tolerated. The broader in-vivo evidence for NAD-boosting molecules is reviewed by Rajman, Chwalek & Sinclair (Cell Metabolism, 2018).

So which should you take?
